UJ Centre for Education Rights and Transformation Calls for Inclusive Systems for Left-Handers

Marking International Human Rights Day, the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT) at the University of Johannesburg has thrown its weight behind the movement to end structural bias against left-handed people.

In a letter of support addressed to the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative, CERT Director Prof. June Bam-Hutchison emphasized that the lived realities of left-handed and left-footed persons deserve far greater attention within human rights discourse. The Centre noted that left-handers constitute a minority group whose experiences in classrooms and workplaces often reflect biases embedded in the design of tools and technologies.

Prof. Bam-Hutchison argued that the call for equality is a practical call for societies to design systems where “right-handedness is not the normative”. CERT formally recognized its partnership with the African Lefthanders Foundation, committing to a mission where no group is rendered invisible due to their physiological disposition.

We are grateful for UJ CERT’s solidarity in ensuring that left-handed persons are not disadvantaged in their educational or professional development.
