This International Human Rights Day, the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative (ALHCI) was honored to receive a powerful message of support from the Office of the Public Protector South Africa (PPSA).
In a formal letter dated 10 December 2025, Public Protector Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka extended “unwavering support” to the initiative, recognizing the urgent need to combat the discrimination and stigma faced by left-handed persons across the continent. The Public Protector acknowledged that left-handedness has historically been met with societal taboos, negative perceptions, and barriers to leadership, which necessitates inclusive human rights advocacy.
Adv. Gcaleka highlighted that the work of the ALHCI aligns seamlessly with the Public Protector’s constitutional mandate to safeguard dignity and protect vulnerable groups who have been historically overlooked. The PPSA has pledged continued partnership in upholding these principles to build a fairer Africa where no one is left behind.
We thank the Public Protector for reaffirming that human rights are universal, indivisible, and interdependent for every individual, regardless of circumstance.
