UNISA Vice-Chancellor Celebrates the “Gift of Left-Handedness” and Inclusive Education

Celebrating the diversity of how people think, learn, and experience the world, the University of South Africa (UNISA) has issued a stirring commendation for left-handers.

In a statement released by the Office of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Puleng LenkaBula affirmed that left-handed students and staff enrich the academic community with innovation and unique perspectives. Prof. LenkaBula spoke candidly about the need to dismantle historical myths on the African continent, where left-handedness has sadly been associated with bad luck or disrespect in some communities.

“We affirm that left-handedness is a natural human variation, scientifically valid, socially normal, and deserving of full respect and acceptance,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

Recognising that most tools and spaces are designed with right-handed users in mind, UNISA has committed, as a Comprehensive Open Distance e-Learning (CODeL+) institution, to ensuring physical and digital environments are welcoming to left-handed individuals. The University celebrates not only the gift of left-handedness but the freedom for every human being to be authentically themselves.
